“The Joe Hughes Project” – Joe Hughes

It was 1997. Inspired by his upcoming anniversary to his lovely wife Vickie. Joe, who at the time was the drummer for the Calvary Chapel Huntington Beach Praise Band, had approached me with an idea he had been toying around with.

Joe wanted a very unique present for his wife. Joe had just finished writing a couple of songs. As a first-time songwriter, Joe had penned lyrics for two of them and he wanted them produced and put into a CD for Vickie. The project was to be a gift to his wife for their anniversary.

Lyrics at this point were all that Joe had. The songs themselves were without any music or melodies. It would be up to me to find a key, and melody that would match the ideas Joe had in mind when he wrote his lyrics. One of the two songs (Before It’s Too Late) would also require a chorus and a bridge to complete them.

So I began crafting a musical arrangement for the songs and also tried a few ideas that would eventually work out as the final chorus. Having to meet his anniversary deadline, the final arrangements were completed just in time.

Joe had originally asked me to do the singing of the songs for the CD. But I decided the one element of the project that was essential was actually having Joe sing the lead vocals on both of his songs himself. This would be Joe’s first outing as both a lyric writer and a vocalist. But I  had no doubt Joe could pull it off.

Ultimately I would add all the instrumentation and background vocals harmonies to both songs as well as completing the song’s production. The two tracks below are the result of months of work from both Joe and myself. It was a very cool project to be a part of. I hope you enjoy this week’s Flashback Friday.
